The 11th European Heart & Lung Transplant Games
(21st - 26th June 2006)

Naples - Italy

A Review of the Games

If you have any special photos please send them as Jpegs and I will publish them along with some that I took.

Competitors, friends, families and donors from all parts of the European Union gathered in Naples, Italy  for the Opening Ceremony of the 12th European Transplant Games on Wednesday 21st June 2006.    All competitors having received The Gift of Life of a heart, lung or heart & lung transplant.

All of the GB Team received sponsorship from Heart Research UK for which we are extremely grateful- Thank You.

The European Games, in my opinion, are easily the best in the transplant sporting calendar.   The competition may not be as fierce as, say, the World or British Games, but many of the medal winners compete at the 'highest' level too.      Nevertheless, each and every competitor has the right to take part and in doing so help raise the awareness of the importance of the donor card programme and show what a difference can be made.

The Freeman squad for the Games, in alphabetical order was:-

Mike Blyszko / Christine Brunton / Judith Burgess / Barrie Beswick   Kaylee Davidson / Rob Hodgkiss / Martin Hutchinson /  Eveline Jelstrom Brenda Jones / Stuart Kaye / Sid Lamb / Graham Marsh / Craig O'Neill Derek Riley / Peter Ware / Joan Whitney / Susie Wood / Terry Woods
Adrian Woodcock / Sue Wrightson.

The medals won by Freeman competitors was a magnificent:

22 Gold / 20 Silver / 9 Bronze

Our youngest adult competitor Kaylee Davidson was 18 and our most senior, Brenda Jones, just 74 years young.   There were also 17 supporters with us in Naples which made for a great team atmosphere.

David Robinson and his wife Beverly were unable to attend due to illness.   We all wish David a speedy recovery and hope to see them both in Bath at the British Games.

On behalf of the team I would like to say a big thank you to all of our supporters.   The Games are all the better for your attendance.

Andrew was an integral member of the Freeman Sports Team and was due to take part in the European Transplant Games until he became ill a few weeks ago.

I attended Andrew's funeral on behalf of the Freeman Sports Team as well as a friend.   His wife Moira and Andrew's mum spoke of Andrew's love of sport, music, cars and life.

Sport gave Andrew much pleasure and he was so proud to represent the Freeman and his country.

The Social programme was supposed to be as follows:

Thursday 22nd June Tour of the Gulf of Naples / visit Capri
Saturday 24th June Day trip to Pompeii
Sunday 25th June Visit to Royal Palace of Caserta
Thurs / Fri / Sat / Sun Excursion to City of Naples

Due to various reasons given by the Italian organisers the above advertised excursions did not turn out as expected, which was very disappointing.   Undaunted we still managed a laugh and enjoyed ourselves anyway.

Despite the many problems due to the very poor organisation at every event, sporting or otherwise, we all had a good time and simply got on with the Games.   Some may not come back again, but the majority will.   We should do all we can to encourage new competitors and their supporters to attend the 12th Games.

I am of the opinion that the 2008 European Transplant Games in Vichy France will be back to their very best and I for one will, all being well, be there.   I have got some preliminary information and it looks to be a beautiful town in the heart of France.   The price has already been set at €450 which is good news.
