David Lyth reports on his recent travels
Since my heart transplant some 16 years ago, I have been able to travel the world once again, I visit friends in Egypt once or twice each year and now have the confidence to travel further afield to visit other friends in Sri Lanka where I spent all of February 2011. Closer to home, I have recently spent a weekend at the All England Badminton Championships in Birmingham along with another friend, Judith Burgess, (we are both badminton enthusiasts). We have been doing this for the past 5 or 6 years - true supporters you might say. The atmosphere in the sports arena was exhilarating, more like a derby football match, with the Malaysian and Chinese supporters trying to outdo each other with noise and chants. The badminton was tremendous especially the Malaysians and of course the Chinese. New additions at the finals were the Japanese, Germans and new lady Russian!! Unfortunately, no British players managed to get through to the quarter finals which was a great pity. Come back Gail Emms - we need you!! Watching the matches reminded me of the good old days when I used to be able to play like that - ha, fat chance!!!! It was a most enjoyable weekend with wonderful badminton, good food, and a great atmosphere. This event is usually held in March at the NIA Birmingham so if you are interested get yourself along next year - I look forward to seeing you there!!
